Teaching Woof how to behave around the motorbike comes from the experiences that I give him.
There are many bad habits that a dog can learn through the wrong training. From dogs trying to nip the wheels as the bike moves to dogs being scared of the bike. So every bit of training I do with Woof is to build his confidence. Around the bike I keep him calm so that he doesn’t become scared of the bike.
Over his first ten weeks with me he has become confident enough to stand on the back of the bike without falling off. At 13 weeks when I went to move the bike Woof started chasing and barking so I stopped quickly and put him on the bike. The reason I didn’t want him chasing the bike and barking is that it can become a habit and that habit can create a trail barking dog. Any experienced pig hunter knows the worst dog to have is a trail barker as they chase any pig away before it can be caught.
It is now at 17 weeks that he has gained enough confidence to run along behind the motorbike quietly.
Because of Woof’s breeding he likes to bark, as he has grown he has found his voice and he loves to use it so I can see that in the future I will have to be careful on how I let Woof use his voice. If he gets too excited he could bark as soon as he smells a pig. While the huntaway’s can make good pig dog’s they can also be bad trail barker if they bark to much.
