kune kune pigs

This article was prompted by comments from Cory Tozey and Luke Seddon about Kune kune pigs that my neighbors have.
Because I like animals I don’t want to allow my dogs to kill my neighbor’s pet animals.  So I have spent time getting  my dogs used to their kune kune pigs so when I go hunting I don’t have to worry about my dogs chasing a pig that I don’t want them to catch. This is no different from a farmer not wanting their dogs to chase an animal that they don’t want to work.
Because I have had the opportunity to allow my dogs to interact with the neighbors kune kune’s they know that they are not their intended target.

What this has taught me is similar to how the pigs in central Otago reacted.
When a wild pig is being tracked by a hunting dog they will attempt to go through either sheep, cows or other pigs to escape from the dogs.

Because I have discouraged my dogs from chasing the kune kune’s they are willing to track past them to catch a wild pig which has happened on many occasions.

On this hunt the dogs tracked off on a pig scent down the gull bellow me to where Gus and Bro put up a bail. Bruce and Woof arrived and jioned in. As I approached the dogs seemed unsure what they were ment to do. As I got closer I got to see why, this wild boar had tried to go through the Kune kune pigs to shake the dogs off but it had not worked. So what I was faced with at the bail was 4 dogs on one side of the fence bailing a 90 lb boar that was on one side of the fence with a 200lb kune kune boar in the other side of the fence. This is where my dogs were not 100% sure of what they should be doing. As I approached the wild boar tried to break along the fence without getting too far before being pulled up again.  As soon as I caught up with them I had to pick my shot before the kune kune boar tried to fight this boar again.

Since this hunt I have bailed both the neighbors boar and sow twice in my covernanted block and am happy that I have been able to call my dogs without their pigs being harmed.
