John Wilkinson and May

John drove up from South of Oamaru with his bitch, May a pointer cross to give her a run in the block and see what she will do on a pig as she has not been onto one with him yet. As soon as we put May into the block with Breeze she was quite keen to have a bark and I could see straight away that she was not trying to go in and grab a pig so I took the rope off her. After an hour of bailing these boars I went down and grabbed one of my other dogs, Fog. I was hopping with the added pressure of another dog that one of the boars might have tried to break but this did not happen. In the end we called the dogs off and went for a walk up the gully to get the dogs onto one of the other boars.

It was Fog that found them and as we were making our way up towards them the black boar broke the bail and came running down at us. I was quick to jump to one side of the game trail as the boar shot past me, as I turned I could see John also jumping aside. The boar was not trying to charge us but if we did not move we would have been knocked over. Fog was first to bail him in the creek followed by Breeze and May. The boar was backed into a hole in the scrub and we cold not even see him in there as it was to dark. We left the dogs bailing him for quite some time as we sat back under the shelter of the pine trees as the rain was starting to fall. The boar did not try and break once as he knew that he was in a safe place so in the end I called the dogs into heel and we waited until we heard him trying to sneak out. Then I sent the dogs back after him, May was keen on this and stayed with him on the break and they pulled him up again in the creek. After the dogs had been bailing her for some time I called Breeze and Fog into heel hopping that May would bail on her own but she was very reluctant and at this stage still wanted another dog with her to keep her bailing. I put my dogs back in for one more short burst before calling them out as the rain had really set in by now.
