Hamish Wells and Indy

Hamish traveled up form Dunedin with his young bitch Indy who is about nine months old. We first walked around the block and could not find the pigs so for the second trip around we took the motor bike up the hill and entered the block high up. As we crossed over to the far side I spotted big Boris sitting right up in the top corner of the block so we crossed back over. As we were closing in on them Fog had left us and was five hundred meters away looking around the rest of the block.

So it was clear that these pigs were giving off no scent at all. There was three pigs together as we closed in with Breeze and Indy. It did not take long for the white boar to break out with the two dogs chasing. I was very surprised when Breeze and Indy bailed again down the hill from us. He broke again down through the creek where Fog bailed him. As we were standing back watching we had to be careful as Boris was stalking us so I kept back a bit to keep an eye on him.

After about ten minutes of bailing the boar broke down the creek a bit further. At this bail Boris came right in beside the white boar and the dogs showed him a lot of respect. Fog had not forgotten what had happened to the other dog a couple of days earlier that tried to fight Boris. In the end we called the dogs off with no injuries and happy with how the training had gone. Back at the house we sat on the deck and enjoyed a nice cold beer on this beautiful day. While we were sitting there Indy just wanted to keep on bailing those pigs as she went down in front of us and bailed Mr Pig so I sent both Fog and Breeze down to help out. While they were bailing Indy came up behind us and bailed Boris on her own as he had come down to see what was happening.

I was very impressed with Indy as I can see a dog that has a lot of drive when it comes to hunting and I think she could turn out to be one of those dogs that wants to catch her own pig. This can be real good when most dogs go straight to a pig that the dogs have got giving any other pig time to get away. I have only ever seen one other dog that has this trait and that was Tig she would get her own pig while the other dogs where hassling another one. Dogs like Indy are few and far between I was very impressed with her.
