I had been on the lookout out for my next new pig dog for the past six months.
I specifically wanted a Beardie collie pup as I have seen some very good Beardie’s come through my training block over the years. I want my next dog to be a thinking dog rather than an attacking dog. We as people understand that how a dog approaches us is how we react. A dog that comes up to us calmly has us feeling calm and we may even pat the dog whereas at the other end of the scale a dog that comes at us aggressively gets our fight or flight mode kicked in. Because I spend so much time around pigs I get to see how they react to each dog and that varies depending on how the dog presents itself to the pig.
Finally a litter of pups came up from the North island that both parents were working dogs on a farm. So I contacted Libby Donald and acquired my next pig dog pup. Libby had said the father is one of her main dogs who is a very good mustering dog on the hill and the mother is a younger Beardie in her team that works stock.
It has been 3 years since my last pup Gus and the people that followed Gus’s progress will know that I put thirty-five article’s up about him in his first year.
So here is the chance for any dog owner wanting to follow how I train my next pup as I will be putting up progress updates on the things that I see as beneficial to the training of a pup through to becoming a pig dog.
I was lucky enough to have Luke De Lautour from our pig hunting club in Wellington at the time and he offered to bring this pup down for me.

Father

This pup was born on the eighteenth of January which coincidentally is my wedding anniversary.
One of the first things with this pup was to get a name for him. I wanted to see him before giving him a name to see what would suit him and it was my two year old grandson Aaron that named him for me, (Woof).

Well over all the years hunting with my dad.
He’s always been a great believer in Border Collie sheepdogs cattle dog cross.. very intelligent and fast learners.
Some of the best dogs we ever had..
I wouldn’t ever go back to hard dogs..
Keep up the good work Bill and do what you love doing..🫶🙏👌.
Just like myself.
Cheers Dave, no point in getting older if we don’t get wiser. Pig hunting like any sport has people at the different levels. Like you it is good to share some of our knowledge that we have gained over many years of learning.
