Many of the local hunters will know that the Ashley comp did not run last year and I had a lot of inquiries as to when it was on so it was good to see the John Bruce (Baldy) had taken up the challenge this year and done most of the organising himself and I was impressed with how many sponsors he had got on board, there was a $1200 BBQ and a $500 recovery kit from Ironman and so many more things that prize giving went for quite some time. We had the use of a digger for lifting and weighing the animals. As usual the first hour was slow but once the animals started coming in our judges were kept very busy. This was by far the best comp I have been to for how clean the animals were. At most comps hunters seem to forget how to gut their animals properly yet here most of the animals were clean and I did not have to cut out one arse, I did remove a couple of throats and the odd kidney but apart from that I would like to say a big thank you too all of those hunters that took the time to make sure their animals were clean. Some of the trucks that arrived were loaded to the max with animals, Ryan Nesbit and his crew turned up with 17 animals on board.
This is also the first comp that I have been to that a sow was the biggest pig as she was mud fat and weighed 174 pounds.
We ended up weighing in 52 boars, 22 sows, 18 stags and 7 hinds.
There was one hard luck story as one group of hunters turned up to late to weigh there boar in as they had only caught it at 1pm. This boar went 172 pounds and had a good jaw on it. Not only would this have been the biggest boar but it would have meant we would have weighed in 100 animals.
As I mentioned there was a lot of prizes to give out and the rain held off well all day until just after prize giving when the skies opened up and a lot of people adjourned to the bar.
