I was up early on the Saturday morning getting ready to head up to the north Island when my son Bryce and his mate Corey Rose arrived at 5.30 am. They where planning on hunting the local forestry and had come to collect my dog Lightning. Corey had two dogs of his own Penny who is a 5 year old Lockley bitch and Miss who is under two and also a Lockley bitch. We all left the hut at about the same time heading our separate ways. I drove to Christchurch, flew to Auckland and was driving south through Huntley when my phone received a txt from Corey, got a good grey boar going to get it weighed. I later found out all of the details.

All three dogs hit this boar at the same time as he broke down into a large native gully. By the time Bryce and Corey caught up to the action there was a real good bail going on with all three dogs going ballistic. Corey spotted the boar facing the dogs and wasted no time in taken a shot to the boars head. Checking the dogs over they found that Penny had three good pokes in the neck and one in the flank.

Miss had a good rip across her arse and luckily on this one Lightning got away uninjured. Corey said that when he cut the boars nuts out they where all mushed up as the dogs had obviously been hard on his back end. The best way to get the boar out was straight down the creek, both guys are very fit and strong but this carry was really going to test them. Bryce said he fell over three time just trying to get up as it was step and tight in the bush. Corey also fell over a couple of time getting it out. In some places they dragged it through the creek which was up to their waists in places but in a hard two hour effort they got it out to where they could get their truck to.

While I was not on this hunt I would like to think that every parent knows how it feels to know that your children have grown up and are doing the things that you have enjoyed doing for so long and they are doing well at it.
